A tidy neckline gives your beard a clear shape. The difficult part is usually deciding where to stop. Start cautiously: you can remove a little more hair, but a line cut too high needs time to grow back.

Find a natural boundary
Face the mirror with your head relaxed and upright. Look at the transition from the underside of your beard to your neck. Aim for a gentle curve from one side beneath the jaw to the other, with the centre a little lower.
The familiar one- or two-finger rule above the Adam’s apple is only a starting point. Neck length, jaw shape and beard length vary. Check the side view too, so you do not shave away the coverage beneath your chin.
Set out your tools
Use a clean trimmer, a comb and a mirror in good light. A second mirror helps you compare the sides. For a smooth finish, add your usual razor and shaving product. A close shave is optional: trimming alone may suit easily irritated skin better.
Trim in small steps
- Comb your dry beard into its usual position. Decide on the shape without stretching your neck excessively.
- Start at a conservatively chosen centre point and work towards each side in small movements. Leave extra hair rather than starting too high.
- Trim below that boundary without pressing hard, following your trimmer’s instructions.
- Stand upright again and compare the sides. Correct small differences without moving the whole line higher.
- If you want to shave, wet the skin, apply shaving gel or cream and work gently in the direction of growth. Rinse and pat dry afterwards.
Care after trimming
If freshly shaved skin feels sensitive, keep care simple and choose a suitable mild, fragrance-free product. Avoid fragranced beard oil on damaged or irritated skin, and allow small cuts to heal.
A little beard oil through the remaining beard can help it feel softer. It is a grooming product, not a treatment for razor rash or ingrown hairs.
If the line is too high or your beard is longer
Do not try to repair a high neckline by trimming both sides even shorter. Let the removed section grow back before reshaping it. With a longer beard, the neckline may be less visible and the hair beneath your chin helps provide fullness. A barber can establish the first outline if you are unsure.
Tidy the line when its shape needs attention. Growth varies, so let the mirror guide you instead of following a compulsory daily schedule.
